When you lose a tooth

A missing tooth can create many different health and dental problems. Not only can the space be unsightly, but the adjacent teeth can shift out of their position causing periodontal problems and misalignment of your bite. These conditions can lead to further tooth loss. Therefore, replacing missing teeth is an important aspect to maintaining your dental health and an attractive smile.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a replacement for the root of a missing tooth which can then be used to retain a crown, bridge or denture. It is ideal for patients who have lost a tooth or multiple teeth due to decay, gum disease, injury, fracture, infection or some other cause. The implant is made out of a titanium cylinder that is surgically inserted into the jawbone. After the implant has been placed, a custom-made post and crown is made to match the rest of your teeth, and is attached to the implant.

The implant process

During your initial consultation, your dentist will evaluate your dental health and determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Determining factors include whether you have enough remaining bone at the placement site, overall general health which can affect the healing process, and other treatment options.

The placement procedure is done in the office under local anesthesia so that you won't feel any discomfort. Once the implant is placed, it is left alone for 4 to 6 months before the restorative phase begins. This is to allow the implant to adhere to the bone in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has integrated, your dentist can begin fabricating the post and restoration which will provide you with a seamless, natural-looking tooth replacement.

After your implant has been restored, you will be able to chew, speak, and do anything else you would with a normal tooth. Caring for your dental implant is easy because it will act just like a normal tooth, allowing you to brush and floss it to maintain its health and appearance.

What are the benefits of Dental Implants over other tooth replacement options?

Implants offer several benefits over other replacement options such as dentures and bridges.

Implants preserve the function and structure of the jaw bone. When the tooth root is not replaced after loss, the bone of the jaw can deteriorate, thus weakening the jaw. Unlike dentures, dental implants are permanent. They are never removed, and become a permanent part of your smile.

Unlike bridges, dental implants do not require adjacent teeth to be modified or "capped" to hold the false tooth in place.

Are dental implants right for me?

Many patients who have suffered from tooth loss choose dental implants as a permanent replacement for their missing teeth to restore chewing function and a cosmetically pleasing smile that only requires routine brushing and flossing like your own teeth.

Some people may not be candidates for dental implants due insufficient available bone at the site of tooth loss, or health conditions which may compromise healing abilities.
