What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom designed and custom crafted porcelain 'fillings' to replace decayed, cracked, missing or broken tooth structure that are permanently bonded to your tooth, creating a clean, seamless repair that is visually indistinguishable from natural tooth enamel.
What are they made of?
Inlays and onlays are crafted from specially formulated strong dental porcelains, designed to mimic the color, texture, and luminescence of natural tooth enamel.
Once bonded in place, this porcelain actually reinforces and protects the remaining tooth structure and protects the tooth from further damage.
What are the benefits of inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are specially designed to leave the undamaged portion of your tooth intact, while strengthening and improving its overall structure. In many cases, this provides a more stable and long lasting solution than a traditional filling, while being less invasive than a porcelain crown.
How long will the procedure take?
The procedure will take place over two office visits. During your first visit, old fillings will be removed along with any decay and the tooth will be shaped, then we will take a precise impression of your tooth. A temporary restoration will be fabricated and placed in your tooth until the permanent one is placed.
This mould will be used by the dental laboratory and master ceramists to create a custom inlay or onlay for your tooth, which we will bond securely to your tooth during your second visit.
Is an inlay or onlay right for me?
Inlays and onlays are an excellent choice for a stronger, more natural looking alternative to traditional metal fillings and preserves more tooth structure than a traditional crown or "cap".
