Serving Patients in Boston, Braintree, Quincy & Nearby Areas of Massachusetts

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin layers of specially formulated dental porcelain that are custom fitted and permanently bonded to the front surface of your teeth. This procedure has grown in popularity because it is broadly applicable to a variety of dental problems, it is minimally invasive, and the veneers are both beautiful and long lasting.

What sort of problems can porcelain veneers resolve?

Porcelain veneers are an excellent solution to a wide variety of both structural and cosmetic dental problems, including:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Unevenly sized or shaped teeth
  • Stubborn, whitening-resistant discoloration
  • Crooked or rotated teeth
  • Pitting, cracking, chipping, and other surface damage
  • Broken or worn teeth

What is the process for placing porcelain veneers?

The procedure takes place over the course of two office visits.

At the first visit, we will prepare the surface of your teeth to accept your new veneers. Then we will take a precise custom mold of your teeth, and fit you with temporary veneers to wear until your next visit.

When you arrive at our office for your second visit, we will have your porcelain veneers ready for you. Your temporary veneers will be removed and the surface of your teeth thoroughly cleaned in preparation for affixing your veneers.

Once your teeth are ready to receive the veneers, a specially formulated bonding adhesive will be applied to the tooth surface and each veneer will be carefully positioned into its place. We will then cure the adhesive, creating a strong, permanent bond and leaving you with a bright, beautiful, straight white smile.

Can the veneers break?

This is very unlikely once the veneer is bonded in place. The dental porcelain used in porcelain veneers is specially formulated to not only look like natural dental enamel and flex with the underlying tooth structure, but to reinforce your natural teeth, making them sturdier and less prone to damage.

How long does the procedure take?

The porcelain veneer procedure takes place over two office visits. The time between these visits is a matter of a couple of weeks which represents the time needed by the ceramist to fabricate your veneers.

Will the veneers look natural?

Yes. The porcelain material the veneers are crafted from is specially formulated to recreate the color, texture, and translucence of natural tooth enamel. An expertly matched and fitted set of porcelain veneers should be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Porcelain veneers are a very popular choice to correct cosmetic problems, largely due to their wide applicability to different types of dental problems, combined with the ease and effectiveness of the porcelain veneer solution.

However, the only way to determine whether porcelain veneers are right for you is to come in for a consultation and describe what your goals are. We will evaluate your situation and discuss all of your available options.

Many of our patients come to us with questions about cosmetic issues with their teeth. A common complaint is jagged looking teeth, with an uneven biting surface.
We have a variety of solutions available for this issue, depending on your specific issues, and on the extent and location of the problem.

Some of the treatments available for this condition might include veneers or, alternatively, tooth bonding. Either of these solutions might be appropriate to improve the appearance of teeth that have become jagged and uneven.

Will my smile look fake?

It shouldn’t. A skilled and experienced cosmetic dentist will craft just the right smile solution for you, so that your new smile looks healthy, natural, and beautiful.

The doctors at Pinnacle Dental Aesthetics have undergone extensive post-doctorate training in advanced cosmetic procedures at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies in order to provide their patients with the best cosmetic options available.

How long do veneers last?

Properly cared for, well-constructed and expertly applied porcelain veneers should last well in excess of 10 years. However, as with any dental work, how well you care for your veneers will affect how long they last and how good they look.

Here are some precautions you can take to ensure that your new porcelain veneers look and function beautifully for as long as possible.

Will my veneers get stained?

While porcelain veneers themselves are not susceptible to staining, the surrounding teeth and the adhesive that affixes them to your teeth can stain. In some cases, this may create a distinct contrast with your porcelain veneers, which can negatively affect the way they look.

Can I get cavities if I have veneers?

While veneers themselves will not decay, the underlying tooth structure can, and any damage to the underlying tooth puts your porcelain veneers at risk of loss or damage and need for replacement. Care for veneers only requires routine brushing and flossing to prevent these problems just like with your natural teeth. We also recommend that in order to avoid damage to the porcelain surface, you use non-abrasive toothpaste.

Can I damage my veneers?

While porcelain veneers are considerably stronger and more durable than your natural teeth, any damage to the veneers themselves or the underlying tooth could cause unsightly problems.

As such, we recommend that you take the following precautions:

  • Use proper safety equipment, including a mouthguard, when participating in contact sports.
  • Avoid chewing on or picking at your teeth with hard objects such as pins, paperclips, fingernails, or ice.
  • Avoid grinding your teeth. If you tend to grind your teeth at night, we can fit you with a special nightguard to prevent damage to your teeth and veneers as well as TMJ problems.
